چکیده

Target audience: Clinical scientists interested in autism, comparative neuroanatomists, MRI engineers Background: The amygdaloid (Amyg) complex and its connectivity with prefrontal cortical areas comprises a major component of the ‘social brain’ network and is critical for modeling the pathophysiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Although extensive studies on Amyg-prefrontal connections have been performed in monkeys using invasive tracers, research on the related connectivity in humans is largely lacking. Such knowledge is important, as it is a prerequisite for understanding the neural networks in ASD in humans.

Human and monkey ventral prefrontal fibers use the same organizational principles to reach their targets: tracing versus tractography.

This article is a comparative study of white matter projections from ventral prefrontal cortex (vPFC) between human and macaque brains. We test whether the organizational rules that vPFC connections follow in macaques are preserved in humans. These rules concern the trajectories of some of the white matter projections from vPFC and how the position of regions in the vPFC dictate the trajectorie...

DT-MRI Tractography and its Application in Cognitive Neuroscience

Recent advancement of MRI techniques and development of new methods of image analysis have allowed us to study large neural tracts within the human brain. This is based on the principle of diffusion tensor MRI that is similar to that of diffusion-weighted imaging but takes magnitude and direction of the diffusion of water into account. Using this technique we have been able to define large neur...

Topography of connections between human prefrontal cortex and mediodorsal thalamus studied with diffusion tractography

Studies in monkeys show clear anatomical and functional distinctions among networks connecting with subregions within the prefrontal cortex. Three such networks are centered on lateral orbitofrontal cortex, medial frontal and cingulate cortex, and lateral prefrontal cortex and all have been identified with distinct cognitive roles. Although these areas differ in a number of their cortical conne...

Parallel trends in cortical gray and white matter architecture and connections in primates allow fine study of pathways in humans and reveal network disruptions in autism

Noninvasive imaging and tractography methods have yielded information on broad communication networks but lack resolution to delineate intralaminar cortical and subcortical pathways in humans. An important unanswered question is whether we can use the wealth of precise information on pathways from monkeys to understand connections in humans. We addressed this question within a theoretical frame...
